Did you ever want to live in a historical mansion?
You only live once. Live it richly!
You only live once. Live it richly!
Welcome to the Butter Mansion. The Butter Mansion is a 6,122 square foot mid-century Hollywood glam home on a hill, well known throughout Longview, TX.
The house has 5 bedroom bathroom suites, a library/bedroom a great room/party room and a very large kitchen. There is also a powder room and garage bathroom, all on a single story as well as a pool house. The lay-out is perfect for many commercial purposes, Air B&B, adult family home, or an elegant family compound.
I bought the ugly abandoned haunted house in the neighborhood in 2021 with the intention of being here a long time, and turning the house into a spiritual awakening center. The house had suffered neglect so I set to work rescuing her back to the beautiful home I knew that she was. I spent a lot of money because I intended to be here for decades; it would pay off.
But life can throw you curveballs, and it is a project we are not able to finish at this time. Two car wrecks last year left us unable to walk and finally without the resources to continue.
In 1958, Steven and Maxine Butter were married.
Steve’s father, Leo Butter, owned one of the largest plumbing supply businesses in the country.
The original house, in mid-century Hollywood glam style, with a marvelous rustic Texas twist, was the wedding present for the newlyweds. California redwood was shipped in, copper and brass and state of the art plumbing was used to build the home. It was the first million dollar home built in Longview, TX and was a bit of a tourist attraction. It had a lovely pool in the back yard.
The house sold in 1979 to the second owners, Bruce and Ramona. The house was renovated, and the family added on the back wing to the house with two bedroom bathrooms, and a library. The library, which could serve as a sixth bedroom, was Bruce’s sanctuary man cave. A geologist, and oil man, the room was overflowing with technical books and music. Bruce loved music!
The family lived in the home until Bruce died. Allegedly Ramona drove off one day and never returned, leaving the home full of Cartier watches, fur coats, designer handbags, and collectible guns, etc.
Here is the obituary for Steve Butter: Obituary
I have gathered the history from neighbors who baby sat for the family, others in Longview, and my UPS driver, who was friends with Alexa Butter as a child. If I am inaccurate in my narrative, feel free to correct me.
You will love when your friends gather in the kitchen for get-togethers. This kitchen is designed for that.
When the second family bought the mansion, the kitchen got an update and was expanded. Ramona was a gourmet cook. It was designed by a pre-eminent kitchen designer of the time. Still present are the sleek European Poggenpohl cabinets, granite island and crushed granite floor. The kitchen is 40 feet long and about 15 feet wide.
It has 3 refrigerators and two dishwashers. I've never before had a kitchen that can fit every unnecessary appliance, multiple sets of dishes and glassware and still have plenty of space left over.
I've replaced some appliances, sent some for repairs, re-wired and re-plumbed, replaced faucets, sinks and light fixtures. There remain some details and some new bling would make it uniquely, and beautifully yours.
Do you love creating something beautiful?
This home is for someone who has vision and is willing to see the beauty unfold until their first party in "the Mansion."
Lucky for you, I have done the big things.
I am not able to owner finance, nor do a rent to own. But I am able to point you to some creative finance options outside of traditional banks if you need options.
I am not a flipper. I used high grade materials and hired licensed skilled trades, rather than using what simply looks good that I can get the cheapest. Other than redecorating, I only like to renovate once. I am happy to pass along the "good guys" to make your journey easier.
Transitioning the Entry
My painter removed all the old paint
A Feng Shui color to bring prosperity
This was a huge and very messy job. The plumbers needed to jackhammer through the slab in many key locations and crawled through the tunnels to replace pipes and pipe connections. It was, unfortunately, a necessary job, and very expensive.
Plumbers dug holes all over the house to replace plumbing under the slab
The guy in the hole is tall
As I have mentioned elsewhere, the home was abandoned for a time. But it had also been owned by a couple that became older, and may not have kept up with everything the house needed. Many fundamental things were required to make the house insurable and livable.
Here is what we completed:
I replaced the roof immediately after purchasing the house in 2021. I was in a hurry! But many areas starting leaking again in 2023, and I discovered that I had a very poorly done roof job and the wrong material for the Texas sun and hail. I was not going to make a mistake again. I spent months searching out the stellar contractors and the best roofing product for our climate so that I would never have a leak again! I love Texas thunderstorms but they call for the best roof that money can buy. The new roof is a Class4 impact resistant roof. More expensive, but so worth it. It has a lifetime service warranty and transferable warranty from the manufacturer. No worries!
